Senate Bill 709 (Menjivar) will enact requirements on the self-storage industry that add additional cost and regulations to affordable, flexible, short-term storage when consumers need it most.
Many consumers rely on self-storage for short-term needs, such as during natural disasters, college student summer vacation, or being in between a move from one home to another. These consumers take full advantage of low introductory rates to save hundreds of dollars. SB 709 may force storage companies to stop offering those discounts and require long-term contracts.
SB 709 will hurt consumers and small businesses with higher costs, fewer storage options, and an inability to take advantage of short-term contracts and low introductory rates when they need them most.
SB 709 will reduce supply, lower quality, and increase prices over the long term, hurting California consumers and small businesses.
